Biophilic Design - Finding zen through biophilic design
On my recent trip to the Dominican Republic, I found myself drawn not only to the beaches and the vibrant culture, but also to the interiors. Nearly everywhere I went, the design was infused with nature — living walls, lush greenery, airy courtyards, and textures that echoed the outdoors. Walking through these spaces, I noticed something deeper than beauty: I felt different.
Design That You Can Feel
Biophilic design — the practice of bringing nature indoors , is more than just an aesthetic choice. It changes how we experience a space. The moment you step into a room filled with natural plants, your breathing slows. You feel at ease, grounded, centered. It’s a quiet reminder that we are meant to be connected with the natural world.
These interiors gave me a sense of zen I don’t often find in typical built environments. They weren’t just pretty; they were restorative.
A Natural Palette of Calm
Plants do more than refresh the air. They bring with them an entire palette of colors and textures that instantly enrich a room. Shades of deep green, earthy browns, soft tans, and organic neutrals create harmony without trying. When paired with natural finishes like stone, rattan, or wood, the effect is layered, timeless, and undeniably warm.
It’s this natural color palette that makes a space feel alive , even when it’s minimalist or modern in structure.
Why It Matters
In today’s fast-paced world, our homes should feel like a refuge. Biophilic design offers that. It calms our nervous system, lifts our mood, and makes our spaces healthier and more balanced. Even one potted tree in a living room can change the way you feel in that space.
How to Bring It Home
You don’t need a Dominican resort to feel this way at home. A few simple changes can help you bring the outdoors in:
Add a statement tree like a fiddle leaf fig or olive tree.
Cluster smaller plants together for visual impact.
Use woven baskets, natural ceramics, or stone planters for texture.
Try preserved moss or faux greenery if maintenance is a concern.
Closing Thought
What I loved most about those Dominican interiors wasn’t just their look, it was how they made me feel. Biophilic design has that power. It transforms our homes into sanctuaries that breathe with life, calm, and balance.
